How to apply and the study visa

The steps below follow the official pages, checked on 24 October 2026. Universities decide admissions and the immigration authorities decide visas.

  1. Get your letter of enrolment: the Irish Immigration Service asks for a letter of enrolment from your college and proof that you have paid your fees.
  2. Choose the right visa: students who need a visa apply for a Long Stay D visa for a stay of more than 90 days (a Short Stay C visa is for under 90 days).
  3. Use the online visa system: the Irish Immigration Service publishes a guide to giving your details in its online visa application system.
  4. Register after you arrive: for a stay of more than 90 days you also register with immigration after arriving in Ireland.

Our study in Ireland guide covers the country as a whole, and student visa guidance explains how we prepare visa files.
