Germany for qualified nurses

Nursing in Germany for Indian Nurses

Nursing in Germany for Indian nurses starts with recognition (Anerkennung) of your GNM or BSc qualification. You need German at B2, a decision from the state recognition office, and in many cases a knowledge test or an adaptation course before you can work under the German nursing title.

In short

Nursing in Germany for Indian nurses starts with recognition of your GNM or BSc qualification in 6 steps. You need German at level B2, then a state decision. If your training differs, you take a knowledge test or an adaptation course of at most 3 years. Medcity Overseas has guided 10,000+ students since 2012 through 18 branches. Call +91 90729 82555. Recognition

How does recognition of an Indian nursing qualification work?

You apply to the recognition office of the German state where you will work, even from India. It compares your GNM or BSc training with German nursing training. If they match, you are recognised. If there are significant differences, you choose a knowledge test or an adaptation course. Make it in Germany also describes skipping the comparison and going straight to the adaptation route.

Recognition in plain steps

The order below follows Make it in Germany and the Bremen recognition office.

  1. Get free advice: the Service Center for Professional Recognition (ZSBA) advises on which route suits you, free of charge.
  2. Learn German: recognition normally needs level B2, and the certificate is asked for during the procedure.
  3. Collect documents: passport, CV, proof of your nursing qualification and training, proof of work experience, and later a police clearance, a medical certificate and the language certificate. The office tells you whether copies, certified copies or originals are needed.
  4. Apply for recognition: to the state recognition office. You can apply before you move to Germany.
  5. Close any gap: if differences are found, take a knowledge test (oral and practical parts) or an adaptation course of up to three years.
  6. Receive permission: the title Pflegefachfrau or Pflegefachmann needs official permission under section 1 of the Nursing Professions Act.

Make it in Germany explains a choice at step 4: a full equivalence assessment using your training records, or waiving it and going straight to a compensation measure. Waiving is faster and cheaper, but your extra training and experience are not counted, so the test or adaptation period may be longer. Read it on Make it in Germany and the Bremen recognition page.

What German level do Indian nurses need?

Both Make it in Germany and the Bremen recognition office name level B2 of the Common European Framework for recognition. Section 2 of the Nursing Professions Act also requires the German needed to practise the profession.

German classes are available at Medcity International Academy.

Knowledge test or adaptation course?

If the recognition office finds significant differences, you choose how to show the missing knowledge. The Bremen office lets you choose either measure.

MeasureWhat it isLength
Knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung)An exam on the areas where differences were found, with an oral and a practical partNot recorded: ask the recognition office for exam dates
Adaptation course (Anpassungslehrgang)A course that closes the differences found in your trainingAt most 3 years

How Medcity Overseas can help, and what we do not do

Visas for work or recognition are outside what Medcity Overseas does. For those, use the official recognition portal, the Make it in Germany nursing page and the German Missions in India, or the free advice of the Service Center for Professional Recognition.

  • Guiding applications to study routes for nurses, such as the UK pre-registration MSc on our UK nursing pathway.
  • Guiding applications to nursing Ausbildung in Germany for students who are not yet qualified.
  • Pointing you to the official recognition portal and advice service for the recognition route.

We do not give migration advice, offer jobs or placements, or promise a recognition result or a visa. Not qualified yet? Look at nursing Ausbildung in Germany, which starts after Class 12. You can also compare all Germany programmes or the Weiterbildung route.

Nursing in Germany: frequently asked questions

How long does nursing recognition in Germany take?

There is no fixed time. The Bremen recognition office says processing time varies from case to case and it tells you if documents are missing. If a knowledge test or adaptation course is needed, add that time: an adaptation course lasts at most three years.

Do I need B2 German to work as a nurse in Germany?

For recognition, yes: Make it in Germany and the Bremen recognition office both name level B2. You will also need good German every day on the ward.

Is nursing recognition in Germany free?

Advice from the Service Center for Professional Recognition is free, according to Make it in Germany. The recognition procedure itself has a fee that depends on the time and effort needed, as the Bremen office explains, and translations, certified copies and a knowledge test or adaptation course can cost extra.

Does Medcity Overseas find nursing jobs in Germany?

No. Medcity Overseas guides study applications and does not offer jobs, placements or migration advice. For nurses, we guide applications to study and training routes such as the UK pre-registration MSc and nursing Ausbildung in Germany. For the recognition route, use the official recognition portal and the free advice of the Service Center for Professional Recognition.
