IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Should You Take?
IELTS Academic vs General Training: see how the Reading and Writing parts differ, which one universities and nurse regulators want, and when UKVI applies.
Medcity Editorial Team

Quick answer
IELTS Academic and General Training share the same Listening and Speaking tests and differ only in Reading and Writing. Academic is the version for university study and nursing registration, while governments accept General Training for migration and residency. UK visas below degree level need IELTS for UKVI, and fully online tests are not accepted everywhere.
In this article
IELTS Academic vs General Training is a choice you make when you book, and getting it wrong can cost you a test fee and several weeks. The two versions share half their content, so the difference is easy to underestimate. This guide shows exactly which parts change, which version universities, nursing regulators and visa authorities name in their rules, and the extra checks students from Kerala should make before paying for a test date.
What is the same in both tests?
According to IELTS, the Listening and Speaking tests are identical in Academic and General Training. Only Reading and Writing differ. Both versions take 2 hours and 45 minutes in total:
- Listening: about 30 minutes, in four parts (two monologues and two conversations) with 40 questions.
- Reading: 60 minutes, including transfer time.
- Writing: 60 minutes.
- Speaking: 11 to 14 minutes, in three parts: an introduction, a short talk on your own, and a discussion.
So if you have been practising Listening and Speaking with Academic material, that practice carries straight over to General Training, and the other way round.
IELTS Academic vs General Training: what changes
The British Council's comparison of IELTS test types sets out the two parts that differ.
| Part | IELTS Academic | IELTS General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Three passages taken from academic texts, 40 questions | Five or six shorter texts from everyday sources, 40 questions |
| Writing Task 1 | An academic-style report | A letter |
| Writing Task 2 | A formal essay | A formal essay |
| Typical use | Undergraduate and postgraduate study, professional registration | Migration and residency applications, work overseas and training below degree level |
For General Training Writing, the official format page asks for at least 150 words in about 20 minutes for Task 1 and at least 250 words in about 40 minutes for Task 2, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 towards your Writing score. The essay task exists in both versions, so a strong essay technique helps whichever you take.
Which version does your goal need?
University study
For undergraduate or postgraduate study at a university that teaches in English, the British Council says you need IELTS Academic. This applies whether you plan a bachelor's degree after Plus Two or a master's after your degree. Always check the score on the course page too, because each university sets its own minimum for the overall band and for each part.
Nurses and other health professionals
The official IELTS Academic page names professional registration among the test's uses, with doctors and nurses as its examples, and the regulators' own rules point the same way. The Nursing Council of New Zealand, for example, lists IELTS Academic (with OET) as its approved test, and nursing regulators in the UK, Ireland and Australia also set their scores for the Academic version.
Migration and residency
The British Council notes that governments accept General Training for migration and residency applications. We do not give migration advice, so check the official rules of the country concerned if this is your purpose.
Is a separate IELTS needed for a UK student visa?
Sometimes. The British Council says UK visas need IELTS for UKVI, which has the same content and format as the standard tests but is taken at an approved IELTS for UKVI centre with extra security checks. The GOV.UK student visa page explains when it applies:
- Degree level and above: you need English equivalent to CEFR B2, and your university can assess this itself, so it may accept standard IELTS Academic. Ask the university before you book.
- Below degree level: you need CEFR B1 from a Secure English Language Test (SELT) by an approved provider, which is where IELTS for UKVI comes in.
Our study in the UK page covers the wider application steps.
Test centre or online?
IELTS Academic can be taken at a test centre or remotely online, in the same format. Before choosing the online option, check that your purpose accepts it. Australia's Department of Home Affairs, for instance, does not accept tests delivered fully online, IELTS Online included, for visa purposes; tests must be taken at a secure centre. Some nursing regulators also refuse online results. For anything official, a test centre is the safer choice. See our study in Australia page if Australia is on your list.
Does an easier-looking version help you?
General Training Reading draws on everyday sources and Writing Task 1 is a letter rather than a report, which some candidates find more familiar. But the two versions are designed for different purposes, and the score you need is set by the organisation receiving it. An easier-looking test is no help if your university or regulator will not accept it.
Checklist before you book
- Find the official page of the university, regulator or visa authority and copy the exact test name it lists.
- Note the minimum score overall and for each part.
- Check whether online tests or the One Skill Retake are accepted for your purpose.
- For the UK, ask your university whether it needs IELTS for UKVI.
- Check how recent the result must be when you apply.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use IELTS General Training for university admission?
Usually not. The British Council says undergraduate and postgraduate study at an English-teaching university needs IELTS Academic. Check the course page to be sure.
Should nurses take IELTS Academic or General Training?
IELTS Academic. Nursing regulators set their requirements for the Academic version; the Nursing Council of New Zealand, for example, lists IELTS Academic and OET as its approved tests.
Are the Listening and Speaking tests different in the two versions?
No. IELTS states that Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training. Only Reading and Writing differ.
What is IELTS for UKVI?
It has the same content and format as standard IELTS but is taken at an approved IELTS for UKVI centre with extra security. It is needed for UK visas such as study below degree level; for degree-level study, ask your university.
Can I take IELTS online for an Australian visa?
No. Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered fully online, including IELTS Online. Tests must be taken at a secure test centre.
