Student comparing PTE Academic vs PTE Core before booking an English test

Quick answer

PTE Academic and PTE Core are both two-hour, computer-based Pearson tests, but they serve different purposes. PTE Academic is the test for university admission and is accepted for visas in Australia and New Zealand. PTE Core is a general English test for Canadian economic immigration and citizenship, and Pearson directs Canadian university applicants to PTE Academic.

The PTE Academic vs PTE Core question confuses many students because both tests come from Pearson, both are taken on a computer, and both last about two hours. They are not interchangeable, though. One is built for academic English and is used for university admission; the other tests general English for a narrower set of purposes in Canada. If you are a student from Kerala applying to study abroad, this guide explains which one your application is likely to need and how to confirm it before you book.

Two tests built for different jobs

Pearson describes PTE Academic as a computer-based academic English test for study, migration or work abroad. It reports that the test is accepted by more than 4,000 universities and colleges, including virtually all universities in Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand, and that the Australian and New Zealand governments accept it for visas.

PTE Core, by contrast, is a general English test. Pearson says it is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for economic immigration programmes that require an IRCC-approved English test, and for citizenship applications. For applications to Canadian universities and colleges, Pearson points students to PTE Academic instead.

Which PTE test do students need?

For university study, PTE Academic is the one to plan for. Here is how it fits the main student destinations:

  • UK: Pearson advises PTE Academic for UK university applications, and a separate version, PTE Academic UKVI, for study below degree level or at providers that are not higher education institutions. That matches the GOV.UK rule: at degree level your university can assess your English, while below degree level you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT). PTE Academic UKVI has the same content as PTE Academic but issues a reference number for the visa.
  • Australia: the Department of Home Affairs lists PTE Academic among the accepted tests for visa purposes. PTE Core is not on that list.
  • Canada: for admission to a university or college, Pearson directs you to PTE Academic. PTE Core is for immigration and citizenship purposes.
  • New Zealand: Pearson says PTE Academic is accepted by virtually all universities in New Zealand, but always check the course page.

Our destination pages for the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand explain the rest of the application process.

What about nurses?

Nurses need to check their regulator, not only the university. Pearson says PTE Academic is accepted by the US Health Resources and Services Administration and by state Boards of Nursing. Some regulators accept neither PTE test, though: the Nursing Council of New Zealand lists only OET and IELTS Academic as approved tests. If registration is your goal, start from the regulator's own list of accepted tests.

Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?

Asking which test is easier misses the point. Pearson calls PTE Core a test of general English skills and PTE Academic a test of academic English, and the table above shows that the number and timing of question types differ. The more useful question is which test the organisation receiving your score accepts. A score on the wrong test does not count, however high it is.

Mistakes to avoid when booking

  • Booking PTE Core for a university application. Pearson directs university and college applicants to PTE Academic.
  • Booking the wrong UK version. Check whether your course is at degree level and whether your university wants PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI.
  • Assuming an at-home option exists. Pearson states that PTE Academic cannot be taken at home.
  • Testing too early. Scores are valid for two years, so plan your test date around your application timeline.
  • Ignoring section scores. Many courses set a minimum for each skill as well as an overall score.

Preparing for PTE Academic

Because PTE is fully computer-based, practice on a computer with timed tasks matters as much as building your English. Medcity International Academy offers PTE coaching along with IELTS and OET.
