Quick answer

German is not needed to study in Germany on most English-taught programmes, where an English certificate such as IELTS is the proof you show. German-taught degrees ask for certificates such as DSH, TestDaF or telc C1 Hochschule, the Studienkolleg is taught in German, Ausbildung needs B1 as a rule, and nurses seeking recognition need at least B2.

Is German needed to study in Germany? It is one of the first questions Kerala families ask once they hear about low tuition at public universities, and the answer turns on three things. The language your course is taught in matters most, followed by the route you take to reach that course and what you hope to do once you are there. This guide sorts the main options by the German each one usually involves, using official German sources, so you can plan your classes and exams around the route you actually choose.

The short answer: it depends on the language of your course

Germany has two broad kinds of degree programme for international students: those taught in English and those taught in German. The official portal Make it in Germany puts the rule simply. For English-language courses there is generally no need to prove German skills, while for German-taught courses you must show that you are proficient in German, using the certificate your chosen course accepts.

The table below gives the usual picture for the routes Kerala students ask about most.

RouteTaught inGerman you usually needWhat to confirm
English-taught bachelor's or master'sEnglishGenerally no German certificate for admissionThe English test and score the programme names
German-taught bachelor's or master'sGermanA recognised certificate such as DSH, TestDaF, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule or Goethe-Zertifikat C2The exact certificate and grade the university accepts
Studienkolleg (bridge year after Class XII)GermanEnough German to pass the entrance testThe level the individual Studienkolleg sets
Ausbildung (vocational training)GermanB1, as a rule, for the training visaWhether the training company asks for more
Recognition as a nurse (already qualified)GermanAt least B2The certificate the recognition authority accepts

Is German needed to study in Germany on an English-taught course?

For admission, usually not. Universities that teach a programme in English want proof of English, such as IELTS or TOEFL, at the score they publish for that course. Students coming straight from Plus Two should know that the choice is narrower at bachelor's level: DAAD India notes that English-taught bachelor's programmes are fewer in number than German-taught ones.

The visa follows the same logic. The German Missions in India student visa checklist asks for language proof, as a rule at least at B2 in the language of instruction, when your admission letter does not already confirm your language skills. For an English-taught course that means your English certificate. The checklist also sets some firm limits:

  • Only certificates approved by the German government are accepted. The examples it gives are Goethe-Institut or Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD, IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge Assessment English.
  • Exemption letters and medium-of-instruction certificates from your college are not accepted.
  • Certificates from online exams are not accepted.

So German is not a legal requirement on this route, but it is still worth learning. Lectures may be in English, yet the city around you runs in German: notices from your landlord, forms at the local registration office, conversations with classmates outside the lab, and many student jobs and internships. Even A1 or A2 makes the first months far less stressful.

German-taught degrees: which certificates count?

If you choose a German-taught programme, the university decides which certificate and grade it accepts. Make it in Germany lists the certificates you will most often see:

  • DSH (the German language examination for university entrance)
  • TestDaF (the test of German as a foreign language)
  • telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom II (DSD II)

The same page recommends at least B2 whatever your subject. Notice, though, that two of the listed certificates carry C1 and C2 in their names. That tells you the standard universities have in mind for full-time study in German, so treat B2 as a stepping stone and read the language section of each programme page before you book an exam.

Studienkolleg and Ausbildung: German from the first day

Studienkolleg after Plus Two

Most students from Indian boards cannot enter a German bachelor's degree straight after Class XII, and the Studienkolleg is the usual bridge. Its classes are mostly in German and you sit an entrance test before you start, so you need a solid base of German before you apply. Levels differ between Studienkollegs, so confirm the entrance level with the one you are targeting. Our guide to studying in Germany explains how the Studienkolleg fits into the wider plan.

Ausbildung

An Ausbildung combines paid training in a company with classes at a vocational school, and both parts run in German. Make it in Germany's page on the vocational training visa sets the language requirement at B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Proof can be waived if the training company confirms that your German is sufficient, but you will still need to follow lessons and work with colleagues in German, so reach at least B1 before you travel. See our Ausbildung in Germany page for the main fields.

Nurses already qualified in India

Nurses who want their Indian qualification recognised in Germany need German at least at B2, according to Make it in Germany's nursing page. This is a recognition rule rather than a study rule, but it shapes the plans of many BSc and GNM nurses in Kerala who are comparing Germany with English-speaking countries.

How long does German take to learn?

Reaching any of these levels takes months, not weeks. At the Goethe-Institut in Bangalore, an intensive weekday course covers one level in 11 to 12 weeks, at 15 teaching units of 45 minutes a week, and B2 is taught as two separate courses (B2.1 and B2.2). Faster and slower formats exist, but the pattern is clear: plan your German at least a year ahead of a German-taught intake, and start early even for an English-taught one if you want everyday German by the time you land.

Planning your German around your route

  1. Choose the route first. English-taught degree, German-taught degree, Studienkolleg or Ausbildung each lead to a different language target.
  2. Write down the exact certificate. Copy it from the official programme page or visa checklist, not from a social media post.
  3. Work backwards from the deadline. Allow time for classes, the exam itself and the wait for results.
  4. Book only recognised exams. The visa checklist rejects online-exam certificates and college letters.
  5. Keep some German even on an English route. A1 or A2 helps with daily life and with student jobs.

Medcity International Academy runs German classes from A1 to C2 across Kerala if you want structured preparation. For help choosing a course and preparing your application, Medcity Overseas can guide you through the steps; reach the team through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study in Germany in English without knowing German?

Yes. Make it in Germany says there is generally no need to prove German skills for English-language study courses. You will need an English certificate such as IELTS or TOEFL instead. Some German is still useful once you arrive.

What German level do I need for a German-taught degree?

The university decides. Common certificates are DSH, TestDaF, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Goethe-Zertifikat C2 and DSD II. Make it in Germany recommends at least B2, but many programmes expect more, so check each programme page.

Does the German student visa need a German certificate?

Only if German is the language of instruction. The German Missions in India checklist asks for proof, as a rule at least B2, in the language of instruction when your admission letter does not confirm it. For an English-taught course that is your English certificate.

What German level is needed for Ausbildung in Germany?

B1 under the CEFR, as a rule, for the vocational training visa. Proof can be waived if the training company confirms your German is sufficient, but training and vocational school both run in German.

Is B2 German enough for nurses going to Germany?

B2 is the minimum Make it in Germany gives for recognition of a foreign nursing qualification. Check the certificate the recognition authority accepts before you book an exam.
